Effective Reading
Introduction –
“Reading gives us place to go when we have to stay where we are.” – Mason Cooley.
Reading has a lot of benefits. Reading helps us strengthen our brain and increases empathy. It also helps building vocabulary. Reading helps in reducing stress and alleviates depression. It also helps us improve our focus and concentration.
We know the benefits of reading but due to many reasons we don’t have or keep time for reading in our daily activities. We surely should have a habit of reading daily. There are many ways of effective reading such as –
1. Divide and conquer :
This means giving starting with giving just a small amount of time in reading. One can set a goal of 10-15 pages a day and increase afterwards. This takes only 15 minutes a day so anyone can spare it. Once you start by 15 minutes you can increase it accordingly.
2. Read first thing in the morning –
This can be crucial for people who check their mobile phone first thing in the morning. We should take time during or before breakfast for reading. It can be an energizing start for you and helps to get a good mood in the morning ahead of a great day.
3. Online challenges –
The ‘new year’s resolutions’ comes only once a year so to motivate yourself you can take online challenge. You can keep a track of your reading on Goodreads, it helps you track your reading also. Setting your intention or goal publically can also help. You can be a part of book clubs for this. This can help you read more which is surely beneficial.
4. Keep a book everywhere –
You have more time for reading than you think. People commuting daily can read while travelling. Sitting at a café waiting for someone, read your book. Having a book during your travel goes unsaid. If you find long uninterrupted time during your day, you’re missing a lot of time which can be spared for reading.
5. Read Shorter books –
This is a great way of boosting motivation or for an effective start who has just started reading. Reading shorter books will help you read more books in less time. You can read short books at the start or can read them between two long ones.
6. Don’t be afraid to put down a book –
This is where a lot of readers suffer. Reading a book which doesn’t have your interest is of no use. If you can’t have interest in a book after reading like 10 or 20 percent of it than you can put it down and move on to the next one without thinking. It happens all the time and there’s no shame in that.
7. Read book review before staring a book –
This will help you know about the book. This gives you an idea whether to buy that particular book or not. You should surely do this before reading a book as it prevents you from reading genres which you don’t like. Because reading what you don’t like is of no use.
Conclusion –
We all know the benefits of reading and then also don’t read books due to some reasons. We should avoid procrastinating and start reading any book, as it has a lot of benefits. Therefore, everyone should read books.
