Zestful Zeno

The world would be a great place to live in if we put the teachings of Stoic Philosophers in to our education. Now I'm not saying this for the sake of saying, the teachings given by them is in their own league. There are so many great Stoic Philosophers from which we can learn to live life. And it is important because earning Money is something which is easy to learn but how to live a great and meaningful life, it's something we lack in. So the Stoic Philosophers namely, Marcus Aurelius, Epictetus, Seneca, Zeno, etc have learned and given their learnings as a form of Stoic. We need to look into it and learn about them. I've given some teachings from Marcus Aurelius in my previous blog and today I'm gonna write about the teachings from Zeno.

Zeno of Citium (334-262 BC), was a philosopher and founder of stoic school in which he taught in Athens. The main ideas that he taught on were goodness and peace of mind gained from living a life of virtue in accordance with nature.

The lessons that Zeno taught are described below-

1. Agreement with Nature -

Now agreement with nature here doesn't mean to spend time in nature, but to follow the things that nature has given us. It has given us two ears and one mouth for a reason. It teaches us the power and importance of Silence. There's a witty quote which goes - 'Light travels faster than sound. That’s why some people seem bright until they talk!' It's better to keep silence rather speak when it's not needed. Robert Greene in his book, 48 Laws of Power explains to always speak less than it's needed. It increases your importance around other people.

2. Conquer Yourself -

The only battle that one NEEDS to win is the one with himself, rest all can be ignored. There's a great quote related to battle/war which is not that relevant here but anyways - "All war is a symptom of man's failure as a thinking animal." Anyways, the point is to conquer yourself, to bring changes in oneself. By doing that only you'll be able to change the world. The world is how you look at it. There's no good or bad there's the making best of the situation.

3. Time, irretrievable -

Now this is one of the most comman yet important point of all. We all have been taught of how important it is to manage our time efficiently. The time once passed cannot come back so we gotta use it appropriately. Time's one of the best gift one can possess so use it properly and respect the importance of it.

4. Trip with feet that tongue -

Our injuries and scars caused from tripping can be healed but words once came out cannot be unsaid and it causes pain that cannot be undone.
We have to be careful about what we speak. Silence can be the best choice if your words are going to hurt someone.

So, these were some of the teachings by Zeno. This is just a tip of the iceberg, many great Stoic Philosophers have given many such impactful teachings which can change the way we live. Many problems, threats and consequences can be solved if we implement such great teachings in our day to day life and more importantly it should be added to our education.
